The social media platform says it will shut down
'effective immediately,' although Brazilian users will continue to have access
to X.
Following a legal battle with a senior Brazilian judge over the platform's rights and responsibilities to combat disinformation, social media company X has announced the closure of its activities in Brazil.
"We are deeply saddened that we have been forced
to make this decision," the corporation stated, adding that responsibility
"lies solely" with Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes.
The move appears to be the culmination of a
long-running legal dispute between Moraes, who has stated that he is fighting
the propagation of disinformation online, and Elon Musk, X's
billionaire owner.
Earlier this year, Moraes directed X to block accounts
accused of disseminating false news and hate messages, including those
belonging to supporters of Brazil's former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.
