On Saturday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 7.2 earthquake off the east coast of Russia's Kamchatka region at a depth of 51 kilometres (32 miles).

The US National Tsunami Warning Centre stated that the quake posed a tsunami threat. However, the Kamchatka section of Russia's emergency ministry reported that there was no fear of a tsunami and that recorded aftershocks from the earthquake ranged in magnitude from 3.9 to 5.0.

The earthquake struck at a depth of about 50 kilometres shortly after 7 a.m. local time, around 90 kilometres east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, according to the US Geological Survey.
